The concept of a Passive House is “Maximize your gains, minimize your losses”.
Passive House is both a building energy performance standard and a set of design and construction principles used to achieve that standard. The Passive House standard is the most stringent building energy standard in the world: buildings that meet the standard use 80 percent less energy than conventional equivalent buildings, and provide superior air quality and comfort.
The Passivhaus standard fundamentally consists of four elements:
- An energy limit (1.4 kWh/sf per year for heating and cooling and 11kWh/sf per year primary energy use)
- An air tightness requirement (0.6 ACH at 50 Pascal 0.03 ACH-nat)
- A quality requirement
- A defined set of preferred Passive Systems which allow the energy limit and quality requirement to be met cost effectively
A new rigorous standard is being added to the ranks of those currently being used to design and rate green buildings. The Certified Passive House Energy Standard, though a relative newcomer in the US, delivers results where prescriptive standards have fallen short. In Europe, the standard has been in use since 1990, where it provides economically viable and highly comfortable homes, schools, offices and other non-residential buildings with 60% -80% reduction in energy use.
