What is a Passive House?

The concept of a Passive House is “Maximize your gains, minimize your losses”.
Passive House is both a building energy performance standard and a set of design and construction principles used to achieve that standard. The Passive House standard is the most stringent building energy standard in the world: buildings that meet the standard use 80 percent less energy than conventional equivalent buildings, and provide superior air quality and comfort.

The Passivhaus standard fundamentally consists of four elements:

An energy limit (1.4 kWh/sf per year for heating and cooling and 11kWh/sf per year primary energy use)
An air tightness requirement (0.6 ACH at 50 Pascal 0.03 ACH-nat)
A quality requirement
A defined set of preferred Passive Systems which allow the energy limit and quality requirement to be met cost effectively

The Certified Passive House Energy Standard, though a relative newcomer in the US, delivers results where prescriptive standards have fallen short.
